Top 5 Tips for Backpacking in Bulgaria

So, are you planning to go on a backpacking trip to Bulgaria? The most important thing to do, before you get on the plane is to book a good hotel in Bulgaria first.

If you’re looking for an Irish run family hotel in Bulgaria, look no further than the Clara Hotel in Sarafovo, Bulgaria, just at a 5-minute drive from the Burgas Airport.

Let’s look at the things to consider on when backpacking in Bulgaria.

Tip #1: Good Internet connection: As a backpacker, a fast and reliable internet connection is non-negotiable. You must have Wi-Fi access wherever you stay in Bulgaria. You need internet to check the weather forecast before going somewhere, to book hotel rooms, plane tickets or bus tickets.

You need internet to check the safety or security situation at a place you’re planning to visit and to check the currency exchange rates. Yes, many of us take our work with us wherever we go, so you want a good internet connection to be able to communicate with your clients and fulfil your requirements. So look for hotels in Bulgaria with free internet.

Tip #2: Pay attention to the reviews – Reviews from other visitors or tourists are very important and they give you a good idea of a place. You can for the most authentic visitor reviews on sites such as TripAdvisor. Now, don’t be put off by some of the negativity and don’t take very complaint seriously. Many travellers are very hard to please. But you should be concerned if there are many more negative reviews than positive reviews for a hotel or resort.

Tip #3: Never Underestimate the Importance of Bathrooms – Bathrooms are very important. That’s the first thing you should find out about before visiting a place. You should find out if there are enough baths in a hotel and if they are as clean and hygienic as you want them to be. You will find this information in the visitor reviews, which we discussed above.

Tip #4: Stay at places close to the airport or railway station – As a backpacker, it is very important to stay at a place which is not far from the airport or from the bus station/railway station. This can save a lot of time and money as you’re always in a hurry to get somewhere quick as a traveller.

In Bulgaria, you should look for hotels near airports or the railway station, as that’s how you will be able to travel around the country. You definitely don’t want to stay at a remote spot, far from the city centre, which is hard to locate.

Tip #5: Be very careful about the food – The last thing you want is to spend all your time in Bulgaria in a hospital, recovering from food poisoning.  Food poisoning is rare in Bulgaria, but avoid street food as much as possible.

You should be fine as long as you have breakfast, lunch and dinner at decent looking restaurants. A dinner for two at a quality restaurant only costs 10 Euros and coffee at a nice coffee shop that comes with free Wi-Fi only costs 2 to 3 Euros.
