Winter holidays are big events in Bulgaria, where people still follow the ancient customs of “koleduvane” and “survakane”. “Survakane” is a custom that starts on the early morning of January 1. Groups of children go to their friends’ houses and use a beautifully decorated wooden stick called “survachka” to hit them very lightly on the back and say a special prayer wishing for their health and prosperity. In return, they are given coins and treats.
Do visit Bulgaria this winter, you will love the experience and talk about it for years to come!
